Japan owed a debt to the oceans during that period. Sadly looks like the seas are cashing in.

The dissolution of the Mongol empire is what happens when you do not defend your own culture. You just fade away, effectively out of existence, into someone else's culture. The Mongols were never actually defeated. They just gave up and blended into the populations they had conquered. So let this be a lesson to you, defend your culture with your lives. It is important.

The Song, as far as I can remember my Chinese History from school, has only ever ruled the south of China, after a chaotic period known as the Five Eras and Ten Kingdoms. The Western Xia coexisted with Song for much of its time, and the north was ruled by first the Liao, and then the Manchurian Jin, the transition of which was also approximately where historians divided Song into Northern and Southern Song, seeing as the push into Song territory by the Jin forced the Song to move their capital south.
